Dr Gertner has been an Adjunct Partner with Essex Woodlands since August 2006. In 2007, he invented the technology behind Oraya Therapeutics and founded the company, developing the technology from concept through feasibility trials, CE Marking approval, and initiation of the first placebo controlled radiosurgery trial for macular degeneration. Dr Gertner served as CEO of the company through 2009, during which time he raised $64M in venture backed financing. He currently serves on the Oraya Board of Directors and is currently engaged in starting additional companies.
Prior to Oraya, Dr Gertner founded Allux Medical, serving as Medical Director and organizing a placebo controlled study in the US within 12 months of founding the company. Dr. Gertner also was an early participant in the forming of Medlogics Device Corporation. In addition, Dr. Gertner has been active in the field of bariatric surgery, having sold a suite of patents and early products to Allergan in 2007.
Dr Gertner received an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University, followed by a graduate degree at MIT, also in Mechanical Engineering. He then received his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University, graduating with highest honors. He completed his general surgery residency at University of California, San Francisco in 2004. Following training at UCSF, he spent time at Stanford University where he developed the Surgical Innovation Program with Dr. Thomas Krummel, a first of its kind program to train surgeons in the art and science of invention and innovation. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at Stanford and is an attending trauma and emergency surgeon at several Bay Area hospitals. Dr Gertner is the sole or first inventor on over 100 patents and has authored numerous publications and book chapters related to surgical technology, surgical innovation, nanotechnology, and most recently, stereotactic radiosurgery to treat macular degeneration.
