George Carmany has over 45 years of international investment and life sciences industry experience. Mr. Carmany began his business career in the international banking division of Bankers Trust Company in New York, followed by four years in Sydney, Australia as the Executive Director of its merchant banking subsidiary. His subsequent career at American Express spanned nearly two decades, starting in 1975 when he held senior positions at the corporate level and in its international banking division, including as Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategic Planning and Senior Executive Vice President. Thereafter he held leadership roles as Principal Administrative Officer of American Express’ investment management and private banking subsidiary, The Boston Company, until the sale of the company to Mellon Financial Corporation in 1993. Mr. Carmany’s broad experience extends to virtually every aspect of the investment banking and biotech industry, culminating in the formation of G.W. Carmany and Company, an advisory business in financial services and life sciences.
Mr. Carmany is a Director of the Macquarie Infrastructure Company. He also served internationally as Director of Sun Life Financial in Toronto, Canada, is Senior Advisor to EnGeneIC Pty.Ltd., a biotechnology company in Sydney, Australia, and is a Senior Advisor to Brown Brothers Harriman and Company, and The Asia Link Group of Beijing, PRC.
Mr. Carmany served until 2005 as CEO and Chairman of Helicon Therapeutics, a biotechnology company founded by the Cold Spring Laboratory, Roche Pharmaceuticals and OSI Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Carmany is the past Chairman of The New England Medical Center, a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of Bentley University, a member of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Council of Amherst College, and past Chairman of the Board of Associates of The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.
Mr. Carmany joined Essex Woodlands as Senior Advisor in June 2010.
