Gilbert Gonzales, M.D.,  brings 30 years of experience as a physician and entrepreneur to the Partnership. His medical career includes academic positions at the University of Cincinnati and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.  In 1998,  he joined Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as an attending physician and researcher in the Department of Neurology and Division of Pain and Palliative Care. While at Sloan-Kettering, Dr.  Gonzales served as a voting member of the FDA’s Neurological and Neurosurgical Devices Section from 1996 to 1999 and as a consultant to the FDA Dental Devices Section from 1997 to 2000.  In 2000, he co-founded Drug Enhancement Corporation of America, LLC, a device and drug delivery development company.

He was involved in the founding or co-founding of several Essex Woodlands portfolio companies, including Richwood (Shire) Pharmaceuticals, PediaMed Pharmaceuticals, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Prism Pharmaceuticals, Clear Vascular, Inc. and Serene Oncology. Dr. Gonzales played a key role in the Partnership’s investment in Acura Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (formerly Halsey Pharmaceuticals) (NASDAQ: ACUR).

Dr. Gonzales has written over 60 publications, including a number of patents in the fields of drug delivery platform technologies, drug life cycle management techniques, new devices and device manufacturing processes.

Dr. Gonzales joined Essex Woodlands in 2001 as Adjunct Partner in the New York office, and was promoted to Partner in 2004.
