Jim Currie is one of the two founding Managing Directors of Essex Woodlands. Mr. Currie has more than 40 years of experience in healthcare investing as an investment banker, entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He began his career in investment banking at Evans & Co. and Laird and Co., both of which specialized in emerging companies. In 1972, he co-founded Munger, Baker, and Currie, Inc., a boutique investment bank that specialized in IPOs and private placements. In 1977, he led the leveraged buyout of and subsequently managed Central Scientific, a healthcare-focused laboratory equipment company, which he successfully sold in 1984. During his tenure at Central Scientific, he played key roles in the financing of Critical Care of America and LyphoMed, two of the most successful health care companies in the last 25 years.
As a consequence of numerous co-investments with Marty Sutter, Mr. Currie merged his venture practice with The Woodlands Venture Partners to form Essex Woodlands Health Ventures in 1985. As Co-Founder, Mr. Currie has served on numerous past Boards, including Parexel, Serologicals and Richwood (Shire) Pharmaceuticals, and has led the investment and development of numerous successful healthcare companies.
