Bill is a former Chairman and CEO of Medtronic, one of the most successful global medical devices companies with $100 billion market capitalization.

Bill brings to EW many years of experience in building some of the most dynamic and innovative healthcare companies, and is among the most respected business leaders in our industry. Bill’s experience, reputation, and extensive network of contacts throughout the healthcare industry will be invaluable to EW as we source best-in-class healthcare growth equity investment opportunities and build some of the fastest growing companies in our industry.

Bill is well-known to us as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bioventus, a Fund VIII growth equity portfolio company, where he serves on the board together with EW Co-Founder, Marty Sutter, and EW Operating Partner, Guido Neels. During his tenure as Chairman, Bill has guided the evolution of Bioventus into a rapidly growing and most profitable orthobiologics company with annual revenue well surpassing
$300 million.

Bill currently also serves as Chairman and previously served as President and CEO of Immucor, a leading global provider of transfusion and transplantation diagnostic products, backed by TPG.

Prior to Medtronic, Bill served as President and Chief Executive Officer of medical device company Novoste Corporation, where he led the development of the company’s innovative stents. Previously, Bill held senior leadership positions at American Home Products, Johnson & Johnson, Guidant Corporation and Eli Lilly & Company.

Bill has actively served on multiple public and private, as well as nonprofit boards. He is the Chairman and Co-Founder of the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (“MDIC”), and past President of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (“AIMBE”).

At his alma mater, Bill was elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 2011 and serves on their Executive Committee, Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, and chairs the Business and Finance Committee. Bill is also Vice Chair of the Board of the Duke University Health System.

Bill received his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from Duke University in 1976, and an MBA from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, in 1982.
